With emissions forcing the demise of Toyota’s Corolla T-Sport, the hot Corolla is going out with a bang with a supercharger strapped on 250 limited models. The Toyota Corolla Compressor now packs 215bhp – up 26bhp, with the supercharger helping to resolve one of the VVTL-i’s weaknesses – torque, now up to 158lb ft. 0-62mph in 6.9 seconds, top speed 143mph. Handling has been improved with 15mm lowered sports suspension and uprated springs.
As with the T-Sport, the Corolla Compressor has a good driving position with a responsive brake pedal and solid gear change. Unfortunately the 2ZZ-GE engine fails to deliver out on the road. The supercharger has helped deliver an initial surge but you still need to wait for the red needle to hit 6,000rpm before the Corolla really gets moving. Compared to it’s peaky counter-part, Honda’s Civic Type R, the Corolla Compressor lacks the high reving sound track with the engine note becoming harsh.
The Corolla has always been softer than the current crop of hot-hatches which has left handling compromised. With the lowered, stiffer springs the Corolla Compressor feels more composed through the bends but there’s no disguising what is fundamentally a soft chassis. The steering is also lack-lustre and doesn’t feedback any information to your finger tips.
At £19,995 new the Corolla Compressor is at the high end of hot hatches however, while sad to see the emissions police clamp down on motoring, the Compressor does the Corolla no favours in creating a lasting impression. source : japmobiles.com
