2009 Porsche 911 Targa 4S Review

For 2009, the Porsche 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S will receive similar powertrain and technology updates as have the other 2009 911 Carrera models.

The glass-roof Targas receive new, direct-injected engines that can be coupled to either a traditional six-speed manual or a new seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automated manual. In Targa 4 guise, the 3.6-liter flat-six puts out 345 horsepower, enough for a claimed top speed of 176 mph. The Targa 4S receives a 3.8-liter engine with 385 horsepower, which Porsche says should be capable of 184 mph.

Also new for 2009 is a standard, electronically-controlled, multi-plate-clutch all-wheel-drive system. Porsche says the system is based on the AWD system from the 911 Turbo, and replaces the viscous center differential in current Targas. Like the 2009 Carrera 4 models, there’s also a locking rear differential for better performance.

The Targa’s trademark sliding glass roof now comes standard with a sunshade for extra privacy, and the glass is UV tinted to prevent occupants from getting sunburned while driving. The Targas also receive the same LED daytime running lights and taillights as other 2009 911 models.

Inside, the Targa will receive the latest version of Porsche’s touchscreen audio and navigation system. The new system now connects to almost every communication technology available: Bluetooth, iPod, USB, and auxiliary-input connections, plus XM satellite radio are all optional.

When the updated cars launch in the U.S. this October, Porsche will charge $89,500 for a Targa 4 and $100,100 for a Targa 4S.
